About Me

My husband, Sid, and I both teach history in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Sid was awarded a Fulbright lectureship in Japan for the 2010-2011 academic year and so we are moving to Japan with our two (reluctant) boys. :)

At Takeshita (Tacky-sheeta), crepes

  1. Yummy! Ok, so a couple questions:

Are these all different flavors? Some look the same but there appear to be slight differences.

Are these made to order or do you grab one from this display?

Do most menus in Japan have English translations on them?

  2. Ah, interesting questions. When I originally took the pictures, I hoped it would show what I could see: the crepes are all different flavors (made to order) and not all of them are what we might think of as crepe-like. There are dessert crepes (ice cream, whipped cream, fruit, etc.), but a number of them are not. There are fish crepes, squid crepes, seaweed crepes. The crepe itself tastes much like a plain ice cream cone (not the sugar one), but is soft. Sam had a chocolate and whipped cream crepe. It was sort of gross, but he is small and liked it. :) As for menus, it depends upon the place. Many places do not have English menus, but many have wax models of the food so you can sort of see what they offer. Of course, that can lead to misunderstandings. My husband once ordered a taco that turned out to be octopus in a taco shell with salsa (incidentally taco is the word for octopus so...).

  3. Interesting. So to get the octopus taco, did Sid ask for a taco taco?

  4. If he did, he won't make that mistake again. I sort of think maybe it was a little Japanese joke on the gaijin (foreigner). He said he just drank enough alcohol that he didn't care what it was and swallowed the taco down. :)
